Arlington Park: American St Leger (ungraded) 1m5½f, turf, 3yo+
BRITAIN struck in the first of the four showpiece races at Arlington on Saturday when 8-5 favourite Jakkalberry took the inaugural running of the American St Leger for trainer Marco Botti.
Colm O’Donoghue partnered the six-year-old, who scored from US-trained Ioya Bigtime and Zuider Zee, who represented John Gosden. Bridge Of Gold, the third British runner, finished last of nine.
A Group 1 winner in Italy, Jakkalberry is owned by an Australian syndicate and is now likely to target the Emirates Melbourne Cup after victory in this $400,000 contest, which is not yet eligible for graded status.
