IT is a long way from a Canterbury midweek contest to the Caulfield Cup but Gai Waterhouse’s recent record with big statements suggests it may be worth following Glencadam Gold.
In October last year, Waterhouse declared Pierro would win the Golden Slipper following his debut win in the Breeders Plate.
Yesterday she signalled an intent to tackle the $2.5 million handicap after her English import kicked off his Australian career with a hard-fought win over Brian’s Honour.
“You might have seen a Caulfield Cup horse today,” Waterhouse said.
“He did a few things wrong: he over-raced early, he was a bit keen, he was all sweaty behind the barriers and between the legs.
“I’m always saying small fish are sweet and it is certainly nice to start with a win at Canterbury. I will just try and qualify him for the Caulfield Cup.”
“He will improve much more when he gets on to a bigger track,” Rawiller said. “It was a great effort today. There is only upside in this horse.”
Jordan’s gritty win over Clever Boy gave Waterhouse a winning double.
