Blinkers put Artois in ripping form
NAR NAR Goon trainer Michael Phillips put the blinkers on Ripa Artois and immediately got the desired result.
Ripa Artois won the Beleura Retirement Village Handicap (1524m) at Mornington on Thursday, upstaging $1.45 favourite Arboreta.
Phillips said his four-year-old gelding had been beset by injury problems over his 16-race career.
It was also the first time the Bel Esprit-sired sprinter had worn blinkers, with Phillips sceptical about putting blinkers on a horse who is already spirited in the barriers.
“It was pretty good. It’s always good to get a win and it was a competitive race with a short-priced favourite,” Phillips said.
“He had blinkers on for the first time – he had them on in work but he hadn’t raced in them before.”
Ripa Artois was sitting fourth on the fence when jockey Peter Mertens steered along the rail to beat home Michael O’Neill’s Gulf Master ($9) and Mick Price’s Arboreta.
“I think he has overachieved when he was young and we thought he was city class,” Phillips said. “He has had a few problems with joints since then.”
Phillips said he will tread warily with Ripa Artois with no firm decision on where he will race next.
“We’ll see how he comes through,” he said.
