Black Caviar Does It Again

Last Saturday saw Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) do it again by winning the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) for the second successive year but she was pushed hard by Hay List (Statue Of Liberty) before asserting over her old adversary yet again.

Her time of 55.53 is either just outside the course record of 55.50 held by Special (Habituate), established when winning the Lightning Stakes in 1988, or a new course record on the basis of thcourse proper being remodeled since Special ran her time.

Either way it was an excellent performance and one that ranks alongside her Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) as her best performance.

In the way that Black Caviar [133] has become the benchmark, then for Hay List he too ran his best race in defeat on a par with his T J Smith (Gr 1, 1200m) performance and Buffering (Mossman) ran his heart out for third so the race has a very solid look to it, despite the small field size.

Single Minded (Bachelor Duke) [113] showed he is a game middle-distance runner with a determined win in the Avondale Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2400m), striking the front early in the straight and then holding out the late rally from Booming (Don Eduardo) [111].
