Golden Slipper-winning colt Sepoy will run in Saturday’s Group I Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield.
Trainer Peter Snowden deliberated over a start in the feature sprint for the son of Elusive Quality after the three-year-old was allotted 58kg.
Dual Choice was the last horse to successfully carry 58kg or more. The galloper won the race in 1972 under the hefty impost of 59.5kg.
No horse since has filled a place in the Caulfield feature carrying more than 58kg.
In 2005, Fastnet Rock saluted with 57kg on his back. The weight represented 4.5kg above the minimum. On Saturday, Sepoy will carry 6kg above the minimum and if successful will set a weight carrying record for a three-year-old.
The Oakleigh Plate will be Sepoy’s last Australian start before he kicks off a quest for international stakes success.
The winner of 10 of his 11 starts will head to Dubai where he will contest the Golden Shaheen (1200m) at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night, March 31.
From there Sepoy will head to England for more international Group I races.
